Chargers Block Party November 27th

50 of the greatest all-time Chargers will swoop on downtown San Diego Friday, November 27th to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Chargers.

In addition to the 50 greatest Charger players, the Charger girls will be there.  Tickets are $35, hours are 5-11pm.  The Charger Block Party will be between 7th and Market.  Several bands are expected to perform.

Bolts shutdown the Birds potent passing game

The Chargers put the brakes on the Cardinals potent passing attack last Saturday, holding them to just 6 points and causing two int’s in the red zone while Quentin Jammer shutdown another end zone pass knocking the ball out of Boldin’s hands.

Our defense got it’s first sack of the season from Jyles Tucker.

Rivers continues to play well even under extreme pressure.  He got sacked 4 times without giving up the ball once.

Our O-line played pretty bad.  Specifically, Clary and Vasquez.   LT and Sproles were not able to get much going on the ground getting stuffed right at the line of scrimmage on most running plays but made a few catches out of the backfield including one by Sprolesy for a 36 yard gain.  LT had 2 catches for 18 yards.

Nanee had a 49 yard grab from Rivers to start the game but, they weren’t able to turn it into points.  He later caught a TD pass from Volek.  Chambers finally woke up with a 30 yard catch.  Malcom Floyd had a couple of nice catches also.

Kaeding kicked a 56 yard field goal, final score SD 17-6.

I’m not too worried about the lack of sacks by our defense but I am a bit concerned about our offensive line giving up 5 sacks.

The Bolts travel to Atlanta to take on the Falcons Saturday at 5pm PST.  Hopefully, we’ll see some improvement in those areas and continue to show strength in the passing game and defensive secondary.

next up, the red birds in AZ

This year is probably the most excited I’ve been to watch the San Diego Charger pre-season games.  Everyone’s coming back healthy and we’ve got a lot of talented young players fighting for spots.  The games don’t count for much but it gives you a chance to see players have an opportunity to make plays you normally wouldn’t.

Unfortunately, San Diego let the seagulls get away with a 20-14 win Saturday in what was mostly a snoozer in the 1st half.  LT and Rivers played the 1st two series of the game and looked fine.  Gates looked like the Gates of ’06/ ’07 but Merriman seemed to look a bit hesitant.  He’s probably just being extremely cautious not to get hurt during the preseason.  Volek looked solid as our backup QB but on the flipside, Charlie Whitehurst had 3 turnovers including two int’s and a fumble in his first three drives.

Rookie WR Charly Martin was very impressive pulling down 5 receptions for 67 yards.  Buster Davis also had a decent game snapping up 3 catches for 64 yards including one for 41 yards.  If Chris Chambers continues to underachieve we have several good receivers hungry for a shot at the number 2 WR spot.  Hopefully, Davis can stay healthy this season.

On defense we didn’t force any turnovers and held Seattle to 20 pts.  Which is not terrible for our 1st preseason game but there’s a lot of room for improvement.  We are so deep in the LB crew it’s sick.  Jyles Tucker, Antwan Applewhite and recent additions of first round draft pick Larry English and Kevin Burnett from the Cowboys.  Tucker, Applewhite and Burnett looked very good in Saturday’s game combining for 13 tackles.

The Bolts travel to Arizona to mix it up with the 2008 NFC Champs this Saturday at 7pm PST.

The ego has landed, Brett Favre is back in the NFL……..yaawwwnn

Seaclucks visit the Bolts Saturday 8-15

Seattle will be in San Diego Saturday to open the 2009 pre-season against the Chargers at 7pm PST.

Seattle is coming off an abysmal 2008 season after getting decimated with injuries. Everyone’s back healthy for 2009, Holmgren is gone and Jim Mora has taken over the ship.

It’ll be interesting to see how they use rookie WR Deon Butler drafted out of Penn State.  He’s one of the fastest guys on Seattle’s roster and is expected to be used for kickoff/punt returns and reverses.

Can’t wait to get down to Qualcomm Saturday night and crack open that first beer.
